Long Description
Desperate Measures is a dark barrel-aged Imperial Stout blend made for desperate times. Clocking in at 10.4% ABV, this ale is deceptively smooth and easy to drink, with dark chocolate, fruit, vanilla, whisky and oak character coming across in both flavour and aroma, all coming from the malts, hops and whisky barrels in which it was aged. This bottling run is a naturally-carbonated blend, which combines 15-month oak-aged and 3-month stainless-aged Imperial Stout batches brewed in 2018 and 2019. Expect this beer to age well in bottle, growing smoother and more malty with time as flavours continue to mingle and hop character diminishes. Best Serving Temperature: 8-12C for best flavour and aroma. Glassware Recommendation: Tulip for best aroma, nonic pint for a traditional look and feel. Tasting Notes Appearance: Black, non-hazy. Tan-brown head of fine bubbles. Aroma: Dark chocolate and cherry with a pleasant oaky quality, malty with a mild roast. Earthy hop character is mild and pleasant. Mild alcohol character reminiscent of bourbon.. Flavour: Dark chocolate is prominent, with a smooth roast character. Vanilla and oaky characters come through somewhat prominently, but are smooth in the finish, along with mild red-wine-like character of dark fruit and berries. Some flavour of alcohol is present but not harsh at all. Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation with a medium-full body. Oak tannin and hop bitterness give the perception of dryness on the palate. Notable Ingredients Hops: Magnum for bittering, and a blend of Strata, El Dorado and CTZ for flavour and aroma. Malts: English heirloom Maris Otter pale malt, Alberta Munich and Biscuit malt, German Carafa, Belgian Special B, and Canadian roasted barley. Other: Blended batch of Imperial Stout brewed in late 2018 and aged for 15 months  in oak whisky barrels, combined with another batch of Imperial Stout brewed in late 2019 and further lagered for 2 months. Both batches were blended into a tank February 27, 2020, and lagered until bottling in mid-April, 2020. The blend is largely composed of beer that had aged in barrels for 15 months, in a solera-style system.
